The document reports on the examination of ceramic specimens, Al_20_3 and TZ-3Y, for modifications induced through grinding in the surface layer and their effects on the specimens' bending fracture strength. The samples examined are one polished specimen each and three specimens each treated by different grinding. For differentiation between the effects of residual stresses due to machining and those resulting from surface layer damage, one specimen batch each of the various groups was subjected to residual stress-relief heat treatment, the treatment modes being selected on the basis of experimental data describing the thermal relief of machining-induced residual stresses.
