For this thesis, TiAl-base alloys have been prepared and analysed which have been subsequently compared with commercial titanium-base alloys for their mechanical properties and oxidation behaviour. A binary base alloy comprising the two intrinsically brittle phases up to about 700 C has been prepared by a melt-metallurgical process including alloying admixtures of 1 at% of chromium and 0.2 at% of silicon. This alloy has been examined in a tensile test, showing plastic elongation to fracture of #epsilon#_B #approx# 3% at a temperature of 25 C, with fracture toughness data K_I_C (at 25 C - 500 C) of #>=# 30 MPa/m.
