TMS (trimethylsilyl)-celluloses of different degree of substitution have been prepared and their solubilities in different solvent systems have been studied. While the stability of TMS-cellulose solutions in the solvent system N-methyl morpholine-N-oxide/dimethyl sulfoxide strongly is reduced by small amounts of water, solutions of good stability were obtained with N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent. By spinning form such solutions regenerated fibres are obtained of a quality comparable to cellulose yarn. Using the solvent system LiCl/NMP, fibres from cellulose and from TMS-cellulose can be varied over a larger range than in the case of the non-derivative cellulose system. The structure of TMS-cellulose regenerated fibres closely resembl...
