Numerische Vorhersage des Eisbrechwiderstandes eines Schiffes im ebenen Eis Schlussbericht

The icebreaking resistance of a ship advancing in level ice was investigated. In the course of the investigations it has turned out that the icebreaking resistance is to a great extent a hydrodynamic phenomenon, which can be investigated with the methods of CFD, and inpart, specially at low speeds a problem of solid mechanics. Two numerical models are under development: (1) The icebreaking process at the design waterline; (2) the motion of the broken ice floes under the ship hull. In Part 1 the computed results show already good correlation with the experimental results. During the course of this research project the numerical algorithms of the program Part 1 were developed further. A better convergency and a faster numerical solution were reached. The numerical model in Part 2 is still in an intensive development phase. For purposes of validation model experiments were carried out with one ship model. We have been able to show that a numerical prediction of the ship resistance is a realistic goal. Significant or decisive steps in this direction, that is, in direction numerical ice tank, were taken.
