The aim of the present study was the improvement of the life cycle of under high pressure (600-1600 N/mm"2) sliding loaded machine elements by PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) - coating of one of the contact partners. Friction and wear were studied in model tests and under technical conditions. In the lubricated state, hard solid layers (TiN,TiAlN) essentially improve the life cycle, while in the non-lubricated state the coating layer rapidly is destroyed, even with MoS_2 as the coating material. Best results in the non-lubricated state were obtained with the metal-carbon layer Ti:C-H.
