To day, lifetime of hip cup prostheses made with UHMWPE is about 10-15 years. Studies have been carried to extend this times: Vitamin E was added as antioxidant, and the prostheses were crosslinked rsp. sterilized via beta and gamma ray irradiation. The effects were tested by means of DSC, FTIR, ESR and mechanical tests like small-punch test, impact bending test, and pin-on-disc wear tests. The results indicate, that crosslinking enhanced wear resistance, but caused brittleness, and post-tempering of the irradiated material is a crucial requirement.
