The effect of drag reduction by dilute polymer solutions in turbulent pipe flow which was discovered by TOMS offers the potential for saving a lot of energy. With particular consideration to pipeline operating some informations about real drag reductions in pipelines are given by a literature review. The principles of drag reduction are explained, and the most effective parameters of drag reduction are discussed. It is shown why maximum drag reduction in pipelines is difficult to compare with 80%-values of drag reduction in laboratory tests. Some data about drag reducer effects on centrifugal pump efficiency and on the transmission characteristic of differential pressure transducers are given. Questions about costs and economics on the base...
