In this thesis, a finite element model originally formulated for static delamination analyses of fibre-reinforced composite plates is extended to include inertial effects. The applicability of the model to three typical problem classes in dynamic fracture mechanics is investigated, namely cases with stationary cracks and dynamic loading, cases with known or prescribed crack histories, and cases with unknown crack histories. Simple strategies for the simulation of the three problem classes are implemented. In the stationary-mesh approach employed, crack propagation is modelled by releasing the element nodes successively.
