The Ostbayrische Technologie-Transfer-Institut e.V. (Regensburg, Federal Republic of Germany) carried out a two-day workshop with the title ''Plastics packaging -technologies for superior functionalities'' from 16th to 17th February, 2004. At the first day of this workshop, the topics of the lectures were: (a) The market of consumer packaging (Dipl.-Volksw. K. Schueler, GVM Gesellschaft fuer Verpackungsmarktforschung mbH); (b) Materials follow the requirements - product requirements and material properties for plastics for packaging and composite materials (Prof. Dr. H.-Chr. Langowski, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung); (c) High-value materials of films by means of biaxial orientation: BOPP, BOPET, BOPA, multilayer-films (Dr. J. Breil, Brueckner Maschinenbau GmbH); (d) Vacuum Coating procedures and transparent Ceramis laminates for manifold applications (Dipl.-Phys.W. Lohwasser, Alcan Packaging Services AG); (e) Barrier materials with highest barrier properties - use of ORMONER registered in combination with inorganic barrier layers (Dr. S Amberg-Schwab, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Silicatforschung); (f) Plastics instead of glass-thin barriers layers for plastics containers (Dr. H. Gruenwald, Tetra Pak Plastics Packaging R and D GmbH); (g) Bag, packages in convenience area (Dipl.-Ing. J. Wede, Bischof + Klein GmbH and Co. KG). The topics of the lectures of the second day of the workshop were: (a) Packaging systems for convenience products (Dipl.-Ing. S. Loeffler, MULTIVAC Sepp Haggenmueller GmbH and Co. KG); (b) Which effects do oxygen has on foodstuff? (Dr. D. Landmeier, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung); (c) Active packages - foodstuff security, european legislation and acceptance by customers (M. van Zandvoort, TNO Nutrition and Food Research); (d) Active packages - first experiences from the test centrum at Fraunhofer IVV (Dr. K. Rieblinger, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung); (e) testing procedures and determination procedure for plastics packaging (Dipl.-Ing. Z. Scheuerer, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung); (f) safety characteristics of packages of highvalue products (Prof. Dr. H.-Chr.
