The fundamentals and models for prediction of the heat losses of different district heating installations are introduced, and the respective calculations are compared with heat loss measurements under real conditions. The examined district heating installations are compared with regard to economic aspects considering both the investment and the operating costs as related to the annual system-specific cost of operation. The following district heating installations are investigated: Overhead transmission lines, hood-type channel systems, tubular (vacuum) steel jacket systems, tubular asbestos cement and tubular plastics jacket systems.
