Research on extending the aerodynamically stable operating range of compressors relies on knowledge about the unsteady flow phenomena when going into stall or surge. This investigation contributes experimental data about rotating stall and surge in a transonic axial compressor of 3 stages to describe the phenomena as well as to supply a data base for validation of computer codes for the unsteady flow situation. Data are acquired from wall-mounted pick-ups for static pressure and from traversing individually a piezo-resistive trandsducer for fluctuations in total pressure, a triple-split-film probe for velocity-density and flow angle as well as a cold-wire sensor for temperature.
