The calculation of viscous flow in turbine cascades for optimising the cascade design requires a turbulence model which allows to describe the most important turbulence phenomena contributing to the losses. The models that existed at the beginning of the project had difficulties with the laminar-turbulent transition and when larger separation zones occurred; it was also unclear how suitable these models were for strongly three-dimensional situations with secondary flow. The goal of the project was the development and the testing of improved turbulence models.
