Hydroelectric power systems interrupt the ecosystems of the flowing water. Bypasses are therefore constructed to enable aquatic organisms to follow their migration patterns. In this, functionality checks are often neglected. The example of the reactivated hydroelectric power plant at Jaegersdorf on the Saale river in Thuringia is presented, in which the functionality of the bypasses and the development of the neighbouring ecosystem was investigated.
