EMERGE. Extended modelling and experimental research into gas explosions Final report

Als ein der Realitaet moeglichst nahe kommendes Unfallszenario in einer Industrieanlage wurden Propanwolken mittels eines Freistrahls aus einem Drucktank erzeugt. Die Freisetzung in eine aus zwei Teilen bestehende Versuchsanordnung erfolgte mit Massenstroemen zwischen 2 kg/s und 10 kg/s. Der erste Teil des Aufbaus bestand aus gekreuzten Rohrleitungen mit 10 Vol.% Blockierungsgrad. Diesem Hindernis (mit Abmessungen bis zu 8,8m x 8,8m x 4m fuer die Versuche im grossen Massstab) war eine Gasse vergleichbarer Groessen mit zwei parallelen Waenden nach geschaltet. Mit Hilfe von mit Wasser gefuellten 200 l Faessern wurden in diesen Gassen (zwischen 2 Haeusern) verschiedene Strukturen, wie z.B. ein Tank, ein LKW oder eine querstehende Wand, simuliert. Um das Risikopotential dieser teilverdaemmten Gasexplosionen quantitativ zu erfassen, wurden die Geschwindigkeiten der Flammenfront und die zeitlichen Druckverlaeufe an unterschiedlichen Positionen der Hinderniskonfiguration gemessen und mit theoretischen Vorhersagen verglichen. Die Versuchsergebnisse verdeutlichen den starken Einfluss von Hindernisgroesse oder Blockerungsgrad der Struktur in der Gasse. Geschwindigkeiten der Flammenfront (v_F_,_m_a_x) von mehr als 500 m/s und Explosionsdruecke (p_m_a_x) ueber 350 kPa (Uebergangsbereich zur Detonation) werden bei den Versuchen im mittleren Massstab sowohl fuer die querstehende Wand bereits bei 0,85 m Hoehe und fuer den 2,55 m hohen LKW erreicht. Die Verdoppelung der Hindernisgroesse fuer die Versuche im grossen Massstab fuehrte fuer beide Anordnungen trotz vergleichsweise kleiner Struktur in der Gasse zu einer Gasdetonation (v_F_,_m_a_x=1636 m/s, p_m_a_x=1000 kPa). (orig.)To improve the knowledge about realistic accidental scenarios in an industrial plant propane jet release experiments with medium (8m x 4m x 2m) and large (18m x 8m x 4m) scale obstacle arrays have been performed. For both scales the obstacles simulate crossed pipelines and an adjacent duct with a structure ('tank, van or wall') between two buildings. The mixture inside the obstacle array was varied within the explosion limits of propane by increasing the release rate from about 2 up to 10 kg/s. Maximum explosion pressures up to 10 bar were measured for stoichiometric mixtures of about 4 Vol.%. Maximum flame speed increases from about 130 m/s for the medium scale set-up and low blockage of the duct up to transition to detonation and 1636 m/s inside the large scale duct. The explosion pressures, acceleration of parts of the structure and flame front velocities measured at different locations as well as the destruction of parts of the set-up and damage at buildings of the test site can be used to quantify hazard potential as well as structure loads of propane jet cloud explosions inside of obstructed areas. Though for the large scale tests not the complete duct length was filled with explosive mixture transition to detonation inside the duct down-stream was observed. Obviously the expansion wave ahead of the flame jet distributes the mixture over the complete length of the set-up and the increase of the flame acceleration distance enables a deflagration to detonation transition (DDT). The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code BASSIM (BAttelle StroemungsSIMulator) has been employed for computing propane jet release, cloud formation and cloud explosion in presence of some of the obstacle configurations. The experimental data obtained for propane may be used to evaluate and to validate CFD code simulation for jet release and cloud explosion in a complex partly confined structure.
