Plasma-pretreatment of metals and polymers enhance the surface tension and thus the adhesive strength of coatings and adhesives. The oxygen or carbon monoxide containing plasma induce functional groups into the surface layer of the plastics, that are identified by XPS and AFM measurements, and that react with the coating or adhesive layers. The plasma method is verified with recycled impure polymers such as PP and PA, with elastomers such as EPDM, NBR and TPEs, and with thermoplastics including PVC-P, PVC-U, PE, PP, PC, and PET.
