Fine-grained tailings produced during treatment of solid minerals are usually dumped in settling tanks. The authors propose to use them instead for stowing purposes in underground caverns. Fine-grained tailings of the ore and industrial minerals mining industry as well as rock dust were investigated with a view to their applicability. Stowing mixtures were prepared with eight different tailings and binders (cements, fly ashes), and their characteristics (strength, settling, permeability, leaching) were investigated during a period of one year. With sufficient amounts of binder materials, even problematic tailings can be made into technically and ecologically acceptable mixtures.
