Fine-grained coal products, e.g. mixtures of washed fine coal, coal dust and flotation concentrate, may cause problems during transport, handling, storage and dosing if the flow characteristics are not regarded sufficiently. Flow problems are caused by bridging, core flux, shaft formation and baking depending on the flow characteristics of the bulk good and the properties of its environment. A quantitative assessment of the influence on the flow characteristics of fine-grained coal beds of material parameters like grain size, grain size distribution, content of minerals and water enables the development of measures to reduce flow problems.
