In one part of the HETTROP project an extended chemical mechanism of the EURAD model was used to investigate chemical processes which govern the balance of reactive trace substances in the tropopause region. This was done in particular in search of new insights into possible influences on these trace gases exerted by heterogeneous processes occurring at this altitude. A special emphasis was placed on determining the extent to which heterogeneous processes occurring on the surface of ice particles in cirrus clouds are of significance here.
