This paper presents the first part of a project to create a system environment for distributed functional programming, suitable for use in the computer algebra system PARSAC-2. 'Distributed Thread System' (DTS) allows a user to distribute a program over a network of loosely coupled workstations. This can lead to significant improvements in program execution time. DTS is based upon Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) 3.1 and C Threads. It provides functions to start concurrent function calls (threads) which are then automatically spread over the network by the system.
