The northward migration of hard coal mining and successive closure of mining pits in the Ruhr District have given rise to a new problem in the abandoned mining areas. Due to the fact that substances can migrate through the cracks and fissures created by mining operations there is a continued release of gas in these areas after the hard coal mines have been closed. This results in a gas pressure gradient which in turn leads to the desorption of previously adsorptively bonded gas. This effect resembles that of an opened champagne bottle from which carbonic acid continues to escape until none is left.
