'Assume the objective of an autocrat, referred to as Stalin, is to maximize the surplus which he commands, which he then can use for investment, defense, his own enrichment or any other purpose he may have in mind. He can achieve this by nationalizing capital and land, and then offering labor take-it-or-leave-it contracts that leave their consumers surplus in his hands. Such a system is inconsistent with market allocation: it forces Stalin to centralize allocation in his hands.
