Europeanisation of production and the migration of the highly skilled

'During the last two decades the traditional mobility pattern in Europe has been undergoing profound modifications. In particular, there has been a surge of highly skilled migration within the European Union. In this paper we analyse the way in which dhe Europeanisation of production in Europe has contributed to this development. In a first step we present a dynamic microeconomic framework. It demonstrates how the rising Europeanisation has affected intra-firm foreign assignments and how this change in turn has influenced the volume of highly skilled migration within Europe. In a second step we empirically investigate the resulting macroeconomic hypothesis that highly skilled labour flows and foreign direct investments have been complements in Europe. This analysis is based an new data an highly skilled migration within Europe and to Germany. It provides support for the theoretical hypothesis but also calls for a more comprehensive, econometrical investigation.'
