'Social psychological theories about intergroup relations contribute to the explanation of discriminative behavior by stressing the importance of ingroup favoritism. Group members seek to differentiate their own group positively from a relevant outgroup because their self-esteem, is partly dependent on the status of their group. The same mechanism is made responsible for the discrimination of deviant ingroup members; Marques and Yzerbyt (1988) coined the term covert ingroup favoritism for this kind of intragroup discrimination.
