Ice crystals forming in a contrail behind an aircraft take up exhaust from the engines. While the ice crystals are falling, these pollutants are transported downwards. To study this problem a numerical boxmodel with sepctral cloud microphysics (MBOCS) was developed. Numerical simulations were performed with this model to study the development and dissolution of contails as a function of environmental atmospheric conditions and of specific aircraft engine conditions. Results concern the ice particle size distribution in contrails, the role of gravitational settling for the downward transport of pollutants within the particles, the life cycle and optical thickness of contrails, and the formation of contails in a cloudy environment. Formation ...
