HYDROCELL-I. Quantitative Erfassung hydrothermaler Konvektionszellen Abschlussbericht

The HYDROCELL program, realized in August, 1995, on the vessel 'J.P. Tully', was directed on the hydrothermal circulation on the eastern flank of the Juan de Funka Ridge and aimed at the examination of the nature and consequences of hydrothermal circulation in young oceanic crusts. The compiled detailed heat flow maps and high resolution seismic images of the upper crust of selected areas have provided the framework for drilling during ODP Leg 168 (July 1996). The analyses account for probe-penetration depths of all measurements according to the in-situ temperatures relative to the local bottom water temperature. The correlation of seafloor heat flow with burried basement topography has been confirmed and accurately quantified by measurements of heat flow and co-located seismic reflection profiles in an area of rough igneous basement.
