'The nine country studies in this and the following special issues of the International Journal of Sociology (IJS) investigate two specific aspects of the complex interrelationship between the modernization process and union separation: the impact of assortative partner choice and division of work among couples on the risk of union separation. The countries included are liberal welfare states such as the United States of America, Canada, and Great Britain; social democratic welfare states such as Sweden and Norway; conservative welfare states such as The Netherlands and West-Germany; as well as Greece as an example of a Southern European familistic welfare state and Hungary as an example for a former Central European state-socialist country...
