Economic identities About the value of underlying value-systems

'The initial question was, which importance traditional values have in the process of modernisation. It was the intention to apply adequate theoretical instruments to elaborate them in the course of our research. We assume that the role of traditional values can be best interpreted within the theoretical frame of sociological theories of modernity. Social uncertainty as a result of individualisation processes asks for a modified formation of capital. Traditional as well as modern values are beeing embedded within those modified social capital formations. Our analyses show, that institution building is taking place correspondendly to the process of social capital formation. So we can also speak about linking, bonding and bridging institutions which emerge in the new economic sphere in the transitional Vietnam. Vietnam has a big advantage: It is provided with social capital and it is able to build the necessary institutions. Institutions emerge by disappearing of certain traditions, developing of new structures, transforming of old structures into new ones. They are still charactarized by patterns of the underlying traditional value system. It remains to find out in which direction they develop and if they support or block the economic transformation process.' (extract)Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht den wirtschaftlichen Transformationsprozess in Vietnam unter besonderer Beruecksichtigung der wirtschaftlichen Identitaeten und des Wertesystems. Unsere Ausgangsfrage war, welche Bedeutung traditionelle Werte im Modernisierungsprozess haben. Wir hatten die Absicht, adaequate theoretische Instrumente anzuwenden, um diese im Verlauf unserer Forschung zu verfeinern. Wir gehen davon aus, dass die Rolle der traditionellen Werte am besten innerhalb des theoretischen Rahmens der soziologischen Modernitaetstheorien interpretiert werden kann. Soziale Unsicherheit als ein Resultat des Individualisierungsprozesses verlangt eine modifizierte Kapitalformation. Traditionelle und moderne Werte sind innerhalb dieser veraenderten Kapitalformation eingebettet. Unsere Analysen zeigen, dass der Aufbau von Institutionen mit dem Prozess der Formation des Sozialkapitals korrespondiert. Vietnam hat einen grossen Vorteil: Es ist mit Sozialkapital ausgestattet und in der Lage, die notwendigen Institutionen aufzubauen. Institutionen entstehen, indem bestimmte Traditionen verschwinden, sich neue Strukturen entwickeln und alte Strukturen in neue umgewandelt werden. Sie sind noch durch Muster des zugrunde liegenden traditionellen Wertesystems gekennzeichnet. Es bleibt offen, in welche Richtung sie sich entwickeln und ob sie den oekonomischen Transformationsprozess unterstuetzen oder blockieren.
