A new method for the characterization of the groundwater vulnerability was developed. According to this method, components of the hydrogeological system and the protection capacity of the unsaturated zone are analysed and evaluated in a two step procedure. The protection capacity of the unsaturated zone is evaluated according to the travel time of infiltrating water. The travel time of infiltrating water in the unsaturated zone is determined by the lithology and the thickness of the unsaturated zone and by the amount of groundwater recharge.
