New technologies and the demand for medium qualified labour in Germany

'The literature on skill-biased technological change concentrates on highly skilled and unskilled employees. The impact of innovation activities of the majority of the labor force in Germany employees with a degree from the dual apprenticeship system - is unknown, however. The focus of this paper is the impact of new technologies on the situation of medium skilled employees. In addition, estimation and data problems are addressed in a topical and rich data set. The paper shows that innovation expenditures and investments in information and communication technologies lead to lower medium skilled employee shares, whereas other investments lead to lower medium skilled employee shares, whereas other investments lead to higher shares.' (author's abstract)Die Literatur ueber den Zusammenhang von Technologiewandel und Qualifikation befasst sich primaer mit Facharbeitern und ungelernten Arbeitern, waehrend die Auswirkungen von Innovationsaktivitaeten der Mehrheit der deutschen Arbeitskraefte aus dem dualen Berufsbildungssystem unbekannt sind. Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Auswirkung neuer Technologien auf die Situation von Arbeitskraeften mit mittlerer Qualifikation. Schaetzungen und Datenprobleme werden zusaetzlich anhand eines aktuellen Datensatzes eroertert. Der Beitrag zeigt auf, dass Ausgaben fuer Innovationen und Investitionen in Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien zu einem niedrigerem Anteil an Arbeitskraeften mit mittlerer Qualifikation fuehren, andere Investitionen dagegen zu einem hoeheren Anteil.
