Analytical results and background informations about 9288 garden soils, 276 samples of garden waste and 6882 samples of vegetables and fruits had been collected all over the FR of Germany (former countries) and evaluated in regard to their contents of heavy metals and concentrations of environnmental organic compounds. It was possible, to associate most of the results to a) special types of regions e.g. urban or rural areas and b) special locations without resp. with specific causes of loadings. Zinc, lead, cadmium and copper in garden soils are the wide spread heavy metals with higher concentrations than in arable soils. Other anorganic and organic substances have more local importance. There are high concentrations often in regions with specific causes of loading. On the other hand it was not possible, to find out significant relationships between high levels in soils and the concentrations in vegetables and fruits from the same garden. Only some species of plants had shown a substance-specific affinity. It means, that the high capacity of sorption and a good degradation of the organic substances in garden soils may be the important cause for this on the base of the results and the background informations. Recommendations have been given in order to utilize unloaded and loaded soils to prevent risks for human by consumption of own produced vegetables and fruits.
