Contaminant migration in groundwater is influenced by the water permeability of jointed rock, which varies with the loading of the rock mass. The Institute for Foundation Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics and Waterways Construction of Aachen Technical University has developed conceptual models and program systems for the calculation of stresses, deformation, seepage flow and contaminant migration which can examine the effects of construction measures, e.g. as required for the rehabilitation of contaminated areas, accounting for changes in loading of jointed rock.
