The purpose of the project was to clarify the mechanisms of action of carcinogenic metal compounds as a contribution to furthering the scientist's understanding of the risk for cancer of employees exposed to metal compounds. Noxions agents studied included compounds of the metals nickel, cobalt, lead, cadmium, chromium, and iron as well as combinations of metals and of metals and UV radiation. Mammal cells were used as indicators. The gene toxicity studies were based on the parameters mutagenicity, DNA exchange between chromatid sisters, and DNA rupture.
