The extracellular matrix (ECM) functions as structural and mechanical support in the organism and additionally serves as a barrier between different cell types and organs. The maintenance of a dynamic equilibrium between synthesis and degradation of matrix components is therefore necessary. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are responsible for the specific degradation of the respective components of the ECM. These enzymes are thus involved in ECM remodelling. During embryonic processes, where an especially intense tissue remodelling occurs, a high expression of MMPs is expected.
