Pigment organization, photo physics and dynamics of the reaction center of photosystem II (PSII-RC) have been studied, and a consistent model of PSII-RC has been developed accounting for the complex spectroscopic properties of PSII-RC. HPLC revealed a heterogeneous pigment stoichiometry of PSII-RC within a given sample. Based on the theory of electron-photon coupling a spectroscopic model has been derived taking into account inhomogeneous spectrum broadening and heterogeneous pigment stoichiometry. This model was applied to the results of deep-temperature fluorescence studies including site-selection fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence.
