In this project the structure of soil organic matter was studied with C-13 and N-15 solid state high resolution NMR spectroscopy. In this context composts were produced from several plant species grown on N-15 enriched fertilizers. The composting could until now be studied for a period of 700 days. The characterization of these composts should provide information about nitrogen dynamics in the soil. In addition the composts were used for the optimisation of the NMR parameter of both nuclei mentioned about. The sensitivity of the N-15 nucleus for NMR studies at natural abundance is very low, because of the low natural abundance (0.4%) and the low gyromagnetic ratio.
