Functional membranes, that selectively recognise and transport ions or molecules, can not technically be prepared presently. Technical porous membranes do not posses pores of well defined geometry or narrow pore radii distributions. A new process for the preparation of membranes with exactly defined pores or embedded supramolecular transport channels has been elaborated, making use of self organising compounds. For this purpose low molecular weight amphiphiles ('gelators') have been synthesised, that associate in methacrylate mixtures to network of solid cylinder aggregates.
