The mechanism of carrier-mediated glutamate secretion by Corynebacterium glutamicum under biotin limitation was studied, and the role of the secretion within the metabolism was characterized. Glutamate secretion is an energy-dependent process regulated by the cells. Glutamate is exported in the anionic form, evidences for a primary active transport system are presented. In the frame of the theory of 'overflow' metabolism, glutamate secretion can be interpreted as a mechanism enabling C. glutamicum to coordinate synthesis and consumption of energy and intermediate metabolites in the case that growth is triggered by biotine starvation.
