The research work dealt with the thermal reactions of nitrogen containing aromatic rings under temperature and pressure conditions that prevail in combustion. The molecules chosen for the study belong to two categories. 1. Molecules that can be considered as prototypes of nitrogen containing rings that are found in petroleum, coal or other nonpetroleum fuels, and 2. molecules that are known to be the decomposition products of fuel nitrogen. The systems that were examined are furonitrile, benzonitrile, 4-methylpyrimidine and nitrosobenzene.
