The catalytic oxidation of chlorinated hydrocarbons in waste air has been successfully investigated in two pilot plants variing reaction conditions and type of solid catalyst. From the tested five different catalysts (1 noble metal catalyst, 1 titanium oxide based catalyst and 3 different mixed oxide catalysts) best results were obtained with the titanium oxide catalyst, which exhibits a high activity (> 99% conversion at 400"0C) and at the same time a high selectivity (<0.04 ppm COCl_2, <0.02 ppm Cl_2, 0.001-0.005 ng TEQ). HCl emission after water washing was < 5 mg/m"3. Corrosion problems in the absorber could be overcome using a polyethylene made stripper.
