During this projekt fundamental knowledge was gained about the preparation of mono- and bimetallic catalysts for nitrate reduction. These findings in combination with the results from reaction engineering tests represent a solid base to develop a technical process for nitrate removal from water. The replacement of hydrogen as reducing agent by formic acid has led to the conclusion that formic acid is much better suited for a selective nitrate reduction. In addition, due to several advantages compared to hydrogen formic acid has a great potential as reductant for other liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions.
