The GPS is currently being introduced on a broad front into the practice of geodetic and engineering surveying. This is primarily owing to the performance and economic efficiency the system has achieved to date. In Europe this trend has been fueled by the political events during the past four years. Triggered by the German Unification and disintegration of the Warsaw Pact, the tasks of geodetic surveying and engineering surveying have experienced a sharp increase in Germany and its neighboring countries in Eastern Europe. GPS enables geodetic surveying authorities and engineering bureaus to accept the great challenge originating from this development.
