The main objectives of the research project whose results are described here were as follows: to sum up the international literature on the acidification of rivers and lakes as far as it is relevant to biological indication, to give an overview of biological indication techniques, to make an application-oriented assessment of the techniques, to work out rules for the application-oriented execution of practicable methods. The conducted search of literature was complemented by the results of a discussion among experts on biological indication methods in regard of the acidification of rivers and lakes.
