Within the framework of a study regarding the formation of OH radicals in the ozone/hydrogen peroxide system, a method was elaborated that allows the determination of the OH radical in the presence of ozone. This is based on the formation of the t-butanol-oxidation product formaldehyde in the presence of a large excess of this alcohol. With tertiary amines, e.g. EDTA, ozone reacts rapidly not only by O-atom transfer under formation of amine oxides, but also via one-electron oxidation, resulting in the amine radical cation and an OH radical. The kinetics of this reaction was studied for the case of EDTA by pulse radiolysis, showing the involvement of a short-lived amino-type radical cation.
