Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are resistant to microbial degradation in most natural environments. PAHs may be subject to humification processes which are responsible for the elimination of hardly degradable natural compounds. For the purpose of bioremediation of contaminated sites from carbochemical industry, the potential of soil micromycetes and of litter-decaying fungi to metabolize and to humify PAH in soil was examined. About 150 strains of fungi from contaminated sites and natural environments were screened for the activities of several oxidizing exoenzymes.
