The main result is, that the two-stage anaerobic-aerobic treatment of high strength ammonium wastewater is an economical solution, save to operate and with high efficiency. Therefore its very important, to project and optimize the total process. On the one hand the biogas production has to be maximized, on the other hand the energy consumption for aeration and excess sludge treatment and resulting excess sludge has to be minimized. One possibility to realize this, is the nitrogen removal via nitrite. This process has been investigated in half-technical pilot plants.
