The measurement and evaluation of indoor air pollution has become a new field of work of environmental protection during the past decade. Furniture is a potential source of pollutant emissions over larger areas indoors. Sufficient information is available about formaldehyde emissions from derived timber products but there are hardly any data about emissions from other furniture materials, e.g. varnishes, adhesives or solid coating materials. In view of the large variety of furniture materials and their rapidly changing compositions a method for objective measurement and evaluation of the respective emissions was developed.
