The work investigates the possible impact of climate change due to an enhanced greenhouse effect from human activities on the incidence of red beech in Bavaria by means of a comprehensive evaluation of literature with the aid of vegetation and climate models. The models take also topographic and pedogenous factors as well as vegetation-historical results based on pollen analyses into account. As the author points out, the growth optima of this tree species are in areas warmer than the Bavarian areas of distribution, consequently, a temperature increase by 1 to 2 centigrades might sooner than not be for the benefit of the beech-tree in its cooler sites, provided the other climate factors, especially water supply, remain unchanged.
