Hazard assessment of chemical contaminants in soil has been distinctly more oriented to estimate the exposure of human beings than to define impacts on ecosystems. Therefore the present report focusses on the latter problem by giving a detailed survey of the state of the art in ecotoxicological determination and evaluation procedures of soil contaminants. The potential adverse effects of a pollutant on soil organisms, the physical and chemical features of soils and ecosystems are described systematically. The importance of pedological key processes and their controlling parameters is more precisely defined. Moreover the suitability of test organisms is defined. Moreover the suitability of test organisms and biotest approaches for the assessment of ecotoxicological risks resulting from pollutants is analysed. On the basis of this comparative evaluation and the critical discussion of already existing evaluation procedures a new concept is introduced.
