The environmental behavior of organomercury compounds with special regard to methyl-mercury(II) was investigated. Organomercury species were extraced with a solution of dithizone in chloroform whereas methylmercury(II) is also extractable using HCl/Toluol. A newly developed HPLC/AFS-system was used as the analytical method. The methylmercury(II) content in river Elbe sediments is controlled by the content of sulfidic sulfur. The crucial point for the formation of methylmercury(II) is the microbial activity in the sediments. Besides methylmercury(II) ethylmercury(II) was found in river Koesseine sediments (Marktredwitz).
