In the first part of the study the bioavailability to mammals and bacteria of polyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in soils was examined and compared. The results showed that PAH toxicity towards bacteria stems exclusively from the water-eluable PAH contained in these soils. The bioavailability to bacteria of PAH therefore essentially depends on their water solubility and on the sorption behaviour of the soil matrix. Animal experiments showed that oral uptake of PAH contaminated soil can induce microsomal P450 isozymes in the rat liver. It appears that this induction is mainly caused by 5 and 6 ring PAHs in the soils.
